(James),** one of the most eminent painters of the Flemish school, was born at Antwerp in 1593. He learned the principles of his art from Adam Van Ort, whose daughter he married; which connection hindered him from gratifying his inclination of visiting Italy. He improved most under Rubens; for whom he worked, and from whom he drew his best principles: his taste directed him to large pieces; and his manner was strong, true, and sweet. A great number of altar-pieces painted by him are preserved in the churches in the Netherlands, which maintain the reputation of this artist. He died in 1678.
