a town of Lancashire, 221 miles from London, stands near the Ribble, six miles from the Irish sea, in that part of the county called the Field-lands. It has a market and three fairs, and a free school well endowed. By the late inland navigation, it has a communication with the rivers Mersey, Dee, Ribble, Ouse, Trent, Darwent, Severn, Humber, Thames, Avon, &c. which navigation, including its windings, extends above 500 miles, in the counties of Lincoln, Nottingham York, Westmoreland, Chester, Warwick, Leicestershire, Oxford, Worcestershire, &c.
