(lagene), in ancient times, was a measure of wine, containing six sextarii: whence probably is derived our flagon. The lieutenant of the tower has the privilege to take unam lagennam vini ante malum & retro, of all wine ships that come upon the Thames; and Sir Peter Leicestor, in his Antiquities of Cheshire, interprets lagena vini, “a bottle of wine.”
