LAGOON ISLAND

Volume 9 · 104 words · 1797 Edition

one of the new discovered islands in the South Sea, lying in S. Lat. 18. 47. W. Long. 139. 28. It is of an oval form, with a lake in the middle, which occupies much the greatest part of it. The whole island is covered with trees of different growth. It is inhabited by a race of Indians, tall, of a copper colour, with long black hair. Their weapons are poles or spikes, which are twice as long as themselves. Their habitations were seen under some clumps of palm-trees, which formed very beautiful groves. This island was discovered by Captain Cook in April 1769.
