a town of the French Netherlands in Hainault, ceded to France by the treaty of the Pyrenees, and is now very well fortified. It was besieged by Prince Eugene in 1712, but to no purpose. It is seated on a plain on the river Sambre, in E. Long. 3° 47'. N. Lat. 50° 4'.
