Volume 9 · 77 words · 1797 Edition

an eminent engraver, who flourished about the middle of the 16th century. He was a native of Flanders, and probably studied under Paul Pontius, whose style of engraving he frequently imitated. He possessed a considerable share of merit; but was by no means equal to that great master, either in the excellency of the handling of the graver, or knowledge of drawing. He engraved from several painters; but his best works are from the pictures of Rubens.
