town of Nottinghamshire, in England, seated in the forest of Sherwood, 140 miles from London. It was anciently a royal demesne. It has a market on Thursdays, and two fairs. By an ancient custom of this manor, the heirs were declared of age as soon as born. It is a well-built town, and drives a great trade in malt. Its market is well stocked with corn, cattle, &c. Here is a charity-school for 36 boys.
