MONT

Volume 12 · 79 words · 1797 Edition

MONTÉGO-BAY, a town of Jamaica, and, next to Kingston, the most flourishing in the island, contains above 350 houses; and carries on a very considerable commerce with Great Britain and our remaining colonies in North America. The harbour is capacious; but rather exposed to the north winds, which at certain times in the year blow with great violence. It is the capital of the parish of St James; in which are 70 sugar-plantations, 70 other settlements, and 27,000 slaves.
