MOWEE

Volume 12 · 159 words · 1797 Edition

one of the Sandwich islands discovered by Captain Cook, is 162 miles in circumference. A low isthmus divides it into two circular peninsulas, of which the eastern is double the size of the western. The mountains in both rise to an exceeding great height, and may be seen at the distance of more than 30 leagues. The northern shores, like those of Owyhee, afford no foundings, and the country presents the same appearance of verdure and fertility. Near the west point of the smaller peninsula is a spacious bay, with a sandy beach shaded with cocoa-nut trees. The country behind has a most romantic appearance, the hills rising almost perpendicularly in a great variety of peaked forms; and their steep sides and deep chasms between them are covered with trees. The tops of these hills are entirely bare, and of a reddish brown colour. The number of inhabitants are computed at about 65,000. E. Long. 204.4. N. Lat. 20.50.
