It is delightfully situated between the mountains of Olympus and a chain of others; and was formerly well fortified by the Venetians; but the works are now in ruins. It is about 31 miles in circumference; and there are plantations of olives, almonds, lemons, oranges, mulberries, and cypress-trees, interspersed among the houses, which give the town a delightful appearance. The church of Sancta Sophia is an old Gothic structure, which the Turks have turned into a mosque, and destroyed the ornaments. It is 100 miles west of Tripoli, and 160 south-west of Aleppo. E.
