PATER PATRATUS

Volume 14 · 57 words · 1797 Edition

was the name of the first and principal person the college of heralds called FICIALES. Some say the Pater Patratus was a constant officer and perpetual chief of that body; and others suppose him to have been a temporary minister, elected upon account of making peace or denouncing war, which were both done by him. See FICIALES.
