Lucan says the Centaurs were natives of that place; to whom Virgil assigns mount Othrys. Most authors, however, ascribe the breaking of horses to the Centaurs. Some make the Lapiths and Centaurs the same; others a different people; allowed however to be both of Thessaly. Their story is greatly involved in fable. See Lapithus.
