POLEMARCHUS was a magistrate at Athens, who had under his care all the strangers and foreigners in the city, over whom he had the same authority that the archon had over the citizens. It was his duty to offer a solemn sacrifice to Enyalius (said to be the same Grecian with Mars, though others will have it that he was only Antiquities, one of his attendants), and another to Diana, surnamed Ἀρχαῖα, in honour of the famous patriot Harmodius. It was also his business to take care that the children of those that had lost their lives in the service of their country should be provided for out of the public treasury.
