SMELL

Volume 17 · 78 words · 1797 Edition

odour, with regard to the organ, is an impression made on the nose by little particles continually exhaling from odorous bodies: With regard to the object, it is the figure and disposition of odorous effluvia, which, striking on the organ, excite the sense of smelling: And with regard to the soul, it is the perception of the impression of the object on the organ, or the affection in the soul resulting therefrom. See Anatomy, no. 140; and Metaphysics.
