Volume 18 · 72 words · 1797 Edition

(John), was descended from a German family, born at London, and educated at Cambridge. He was vicar of Low Layton in Essex, and distinguished himself by his compilations of Lives and Memoirs; in which, as Dr Birch remarks, his fidelity and industry will always give a value to his writings, however defective they may be of the graces of style. He died in 1737, after having enjoyed his vicarage near 68 years.
