SUCCOBUS

Volume 18 · 83 words · 1797 Edition

a term used by some writers for a daemon who affumes the shape of a woman, and as such lies with a man; in which sense it stands opposed to incubus, which was a daemon in form of a man, that lies with a woman. But the truth is, the succubus is only a species of the nightmare. See Medicine, p. 329

**SUCULA**, in mechanics, an axis or cylinder, with flames in it to move it round; but without any tympanum or pettrochium.
