SUIDAS

Volume 18 · 197 words · 1797 Edition

a Greek writer, according to some, flourished in the 11th century, under the reign of the Emperor Alexius Comnenus; according to others, before the 10th century. He wrote in Greek an Historical and Geographical Dictionary or Lexicon; a work which, though not always strictly accurate, is nevertheless of great importance, as it contains many things taken from the ancients that are nowhere else to be found. The best edition of Suidas is that of Krieger, in Greek and Latin, with notes, printed in 3 vols folio, which has been much improved by Toup.

Lapis Sullius. See Stone-Stone.

Suit, is used in different senses; as, 1. Suit of courts or suit-service, which is an attendance the tenant owes to his lord's court. 2. Suit-covenant, where a person has covenant to do service in the court of the lord. 3. Suit-continu, which is where one and his ancestors have owed suit time out of mind. 4. It is used for a petition to the king or any person of dignity, where a lord distrains his tenant for suit, and none is due. In this case, the party may have an attachment against him to appear in the king's court.
