WESTRINGIA

Volume 502 · 99 words · 1797 Edition

a new genus of plants described by J. E. Smith, M. D., president of the Linnaean Society of London. It was first discovered in New Holland by Dr Solander, who called it *Cunila Fruticosa*, though it is totally different from the *Cunila* (see that article, *Encyc.*), and more resembles rosemary, from which, however, it is likewise different. Its peculiar character is: *Calyx* seminiquinquefidius, pentagonus; *corolla* reflexa, limbo quadrifido, lobo longiore erecto, bipartito; *stamina* dilatantia, duo breviora (inferiora) abortiva. Dr Smith assigns it rather to the *dianthus-angustipetala*, placing it immediately after the *Tenerium*, than to the *diandra* class of plants.
