JAMES, an eminent painter, was born at Antwerp in 1580, and received his chief instructions from Velvet Breughel. He applied himself to the study of landscapes, and went to Italy to improve himself in colouring. He succeeded so happily, that his works are said to be nearly equal to those of Titian.—He was engaged and much cared for at the court of the elector Palatine, and afterwards spent several years of his life in France; where his works met with universal approbation. By some misconduct, however, he fell into poverty, and died in 1659 in the house of an inconsiderable painter. He had resided for several years at Rome and Venice, where he acquired that excellent style of colouring and design for which his works have been deservedly distinguished.
