**Assumption**, a festival in the Roman church, in honour of the miraculous ascent of the Virgin Mary into heaven: the Greek church, who also observe this festival, celebrate it on the 15th of August with great ceremony.

**Assumptive arms**, in Heraldry, are such as a person has a right to assume, with the approbation of his sovereign, and of the heralds: thus, if a person who has no right by blood, and has no coat of arms, shall Assurance shall captivate in any lawful war any gentleman, nobleman, or prince; he is, in that case, entitled to bear the shield of that prisoner, and enjoy it to him and his heirs for ever.
