BEMBEA

Volume 3 · 114 words · 1810 Edition

a province of the kingdom of Angola in Africa. It is divided into Higher and Lower; and extends on one side along the sea, and on the other divides Angola from the foreign states on the south. The country is large, populous, and abounding with cattle; with the fat of which the inhabitants anoint their heads and bodies, and clothe themselves with their hides coarsely dressed. They are addicted to the same idolatrous superstitions with the rest of the natives, but speak a quite different language. The province is watered by a river called Luano or San Francisco, which abounds with crocodiles, sea horses, and monstrous serpents, that do a great deal of mischief.
