a town of France in the Lower Auvergne, now the department of Cantal, seated on a small river called Jourdan. It is one of the most considerable towns of the province, has six gates, is very populous, and yet has but one parish. The castle is very high, and commands the town. The abbot was lord of Aurillac, and had episcopal jurisdiction; and was also chief justice of the town. This place is remarkable for having produced several great men.
