a sea-port town of Sussex in England. It is a pretty large and populous town, though ill built, and has a pretty good harbour. W. Long. 0° 10' N. Lat. 50° 30'. It was at this place King Charles II. embarked for France 1651, after the battle of Worcester. It has lately been considerably extended and embellished, in consequence of its having become a place of great resort for sea-bathing.
