a strong town in Poland, capital of a palatinate of the same name. The houses are built of wood. It was taken by the Turks in 1672, but retaken three years afterwards. It is seated on the river Bog, in E. Long. 29. 20. N. Lat. 48. 5.

a palatinate of that name, which is the eastern part of Podolia; it is also called Lower Podolia, and is of greater extent than Upper Podolia, but is more defoliate, on account of the neighbourhood of the Tartars.
