in the French customs, denotes the grant of some favour or donation from the king; in which sense it partly answers to our warrant, and partly to letters-patent.

more particularly denotes the commission of a subaltern officer, being only written on parchment, and without seal. A brevet officer is one whose rank in the army is above his pay; for instance, a brevet major serves only as a captain, and receives pay as such.
