in Ancient Geography, a town of Phoenicia, situated between Berytus and Batrys; it was the royal residence of Cinyras; sacred to Adonis. Pompey delivered it from a tyrant, whom he caused to be beheaded. It stood at no great distance from the sea, on an eminence (Strabo): near it ran the Adonis into the Mediterranean. Now in ruins.
