GUAXACA

a province in the audience of Mexico, in New Spain, which is very fertile in wheat, Indian corn, cochineal, and caffia. It is bounded by the gulf of Mexico on the north, and by the South Sea on the south. It contains mines of gold and silver. Guaxaca is the capital town.

the capital town of the above province, with a bishop's fee. It is without walls, and does not contain above 2000 inhabitants; but it is rich, and they make very fine sweet-meats and chocolates. It has several rich convents, both for men and women. W. Long. 100°. N. Lat. 17° 25'.
