CHAMBERY

CHAMBERY, a considerable and populous town of Italy, in Savoy, with a castle. It is capital of the duchy, and well built, but has no fortifications. It is watered by several streams, which have their sources in St Martin's hill, and run through several of the streets. There are piazzas under most part of the houses, where people may walk dry in the worst weather. It hath large and handsome suburbs; and in the centre of the town is the royal palace. The parliament meet here, which is composed of four presidents, and a pretty large number of senators, being the supreme tribunal of the whole duchy. The principal church is St Leger, and the Jesuits college is the most magnificent of all the monasteries. E. Long. 5° 50'. N. Lat. 45° 25'.
