Volume 6 · 104 words · 1810 Edition

a Franciscan, or religious of the order of St Francis. The Cordeliers are clothed in thick grey cloth, with a little cowl, a chaperon, and cloak of the same; having a girdle of rope or cord tied with three knots: whence the name.—They are otherwise called Minor Friars, their original name. The denomination Cordelier is said to have been first given them in the war of St Louis against the infidels; wherein the Friars Minor having repulsed the barbarians, and that king having inquired their name, it was answered, they were people cordelez, "tied with ropes." The Cordeliers are to a man professed Scotists.
