Volume 6 · 91 words · 1810 Edition

OVER and NETHER, two villages about four miles west of Edinburgh; of which only the last deserves notice, as having been once a famous naval station of the Romans. It is situated at the influx of the river Almond into the Forth. Three Roman roads meet at this place, which was called by them Alaterosa, and whither they brought their grain for the support of their troops. The village contains about 300 inhabitants. Here are the remains of a bath and satory; and many altars, medals, &c. have been dug up.
