Volume 9 · 135 words · 1810 Edition

a small imperial town of Westphalia in Germany, with a castle built by the emperor Frederic I. E. Long, 8. 13. N. Lat. 50° 25'.

GELLENIUS, Sigismund, a learned and excellent man, born of a good family at Prague, about the year 1498. Erasmus conceiving an esteem for him at Basil, recommended him to John Frobenius as a corrector for his printing-house; which laborious charge he accepted, and had a great number of Hebrew, Greek, and Latin books to correct: he also translated many works himself from the Greek into Latin; and published a dictionary in four languages, Greek, Latin, German, and Slavonian. Profitable and honourable employments were offered him in other places; but nothing could tempt him to quit his peaceful situation at Basil. He died in 1555. All his translations are highly esteemed.
