Volume 9 · 61 words · 1810 Edition

or GIBET, a machine in manner of a gallows, whereon notorious criminals, after execution, are hung in irons or chains, as spectacles in terrorum. See GALLOWS.—The word in French, gilet, properly denotes what we call gallows: it is supposed to come originally from the Arabic giblet, "mount or elevation of ground;" by reason giblets are usually placed on hills or eminences.
