JALEMUS

Volume 11 · 46 words · 1810 Edition

in antiquity, a kind of mournful song, used upon occasion of death, or any other affecting accident. Hence the Greek proverbs had their original, ἀλείμων ὁμοργίας, or ἀλείμων, i.e. more sad or colder than a jalemus, as τὸ ἐπικάθευσις ὑπερέχεις, worthy to be ranked among jalemuses.
