an ancient, rich, and celebrated town of Greece, in the province of Janna or Theffaly, with an archbishop's fee of the Greek church, a palace, and several handsome mosques. According to Virgil, it was the country of Achilles. It was also the place where Philip the father of Alexander the Great resided.—The inhabitants carry on a considerable trade. The city is agreeably seated on the river Peneus, in E. Long. 23° 36'. N. Lat. 38° 51'.
