a province of the Russian empire, lying on the gulf of Finland, being about 130 miles in length, and 50 in breadth. It abounds in game and fish; and here are a great number of elks, which come in troops from Finland in the spring and autumn. It was conquered by the Czar Peter the Great, and Peterburgh is the capital town. It is bounded by the river Neva, and the gulf of Finland, on the north; by Great Novgorod, on the east and south; and by Livonia, on the west.
