a book or paper written with the hand; by which it stands opposed to a printed book or paper. A manuscript is usually denoted by the two letters MS. and in the plural by MSS. What makes public libraries valuable, is the number of ancient manuscripts reposed in them; see Alexandrian, Cambridge, Clermont, Cottonian, Harleian, Vatican, &c.
