in NATURAL HISTORY, the name of an earth famous in the earliest ages of painting, being the only white of the great painters of antiquity; and, according to Pliny's account, one of the three colours with which alone they performed all their works. From the description given of this earth it seems to be alu- minous, tolerably pure, and in a state of minute di- vision.
