a mountain in the environs of Berne in Switzerland. It is the last mountain in a high calcareous chain of hills, of which the Stockhorn, the Neuneren, and the Ganterish, have been illustrated by the botanical labours of the celebrated Haller. Niel stands on the borders of the lake Thun, and separates the valley of Frutigen from that of Simme. It is very interesting to the curious traveller, on account of the fine view from its top; and to naturalists, because it joins the Alps. Towards its foot, beds of slate have been discovered; it is of calcareous stone higher up; and near its top is found a species of pudding-stone, filled with small fragments of broken petrifications.
