or Porto, a flourishing city and seaport of Portugal, in the province of Entre-Douro-e-Minho, with a bishop's see. Nature has rendered it almost impregnable; and it is justly celebrated for the strength of its wines, large quantities of which are exported. ported to Britain, and on this account all red wines either from Spain or Portugal are denominated port wines.

After the earthquake at Lisbon in the year 1755, the trade of this city increased rapidly, before which memorable period its population did not exceed 20,000; but it is now computed at upwards of 40,000. Oporto is situated on the declivity of a mountain, near the river Douro, which forms an excellent and commodious harbour; and is about 147 miles north by east of Lisbon.
