or PALMA Nova, a very strong town of Italy, in Friuli, in the territory of Venice. It is a very important place, for the defence of the Venetians against the Austrians and Turks; and was built in 1593, for that very purpose. They have cut a canal near this place, which is very advantageous. It is located on the sea side, 10 miles south-east of Udine, and 55 from Venice. E. Long. 13° 15'. N. Lat. 46° 2'.

an island in the Atlantic ocean, and one of the Canaries, 56 miles north-west of Gomera, and about 75 in circumference. It abounds in wine and sugar; and has a handsome town of the same name, which carries on a trade in wine to the West Indies and other parts. Their best vines grow in a soil called the Brenia, where they make 12,000 butts of wine every year, which is well known by the name of palm wine. There is plenty of cattle, and all sorts of fruits. In 1625 a volcano broke out in this island, with a most violent earthquake; the flame was seen for six weeks together, and a great quantity of ashes were thrown as far as Teneriffe. It was conquered by the Spaniards in 1460.
