PATNA

Volume 17 · 115 words · 1810 Edition

a town of Asia, in the dominions of the Great Mogul, to the north of the kingdom of Bengal, where the English have factories for saltpetre, borax, and raw silk. It is the capital of the province of Bihar, a dependency of Bengal, in the empire of Indostan, situated in a pleasant country, 400 miles east of Agra. It extends seven miles in length on the banks of the Ganges, and is about half a mile in breadth.—Mr Renzel gives strong reasons for supposing it to be the ancient Pallebothra. The town is large and populous, but the houses are built at a distance from each other. E. Long. 85. 40. N. Lat. 45. 25.
