a sea-port town in Devonshire, seated on the river Dart, near its fall into the sea. It is a well frequented and populous place, having a commodious harbour, and a considerable trade by sea. The town is large and well built; but the streets are narrow and bad, though all paved. It has the title of an earldom, and sends two members to parliament. W. Long. 4° 0'. N. Lat. 50° 25'.
