a province of Brazil, in South America, bounded on the north by Tamera, on the east by the ocean, on the south by Sergipeppa, and on the west by Tapuyers. It is about 200 miles in length and 150 in breadth. The Dutch became masters of it in 1639, but the Portuguese soon after retook it. It produces a great quantity of sugar, cotton, and the best Brazil wood.
