a handsome and strong town of the Austrian Netherlands, in Flanders, with a strong citadel. It was taken by the allies in 1706, and by the French in 1745. It is surrounded by marshes and fine meadows, which the inhabitants can lay under water when they please. It is seated at the confluence of the Dender and Scheldt. E. Long. 4° 3'. N. Lat. 51° 3'.
