Tavila, a considerable town of Portugal, and capital of the province of Algarve, with a handsome castle, and one of the best harbours in the kingdom, defended by a fort. It is seated in a fertile country, at the mouth of the river Gilao, between Cape Vincent and the strait of Gibraltar, 100 miles west by north of Cadiz. W. Long. 7° 46'. N. Lat. 37° 18'.
