in Ancient Geography, a town of the Raurici, situated over against Abnoba, a mountain from which the Danube takes its rise. A Roman colony led by L. Manutius Plancus the scholar and friend of Cicero; called Colonia Rauriaca (Pliny), Raurica (Inscription), Augusta Rauricorum. The town was destroyed in Julian's time. It is now commonly called Augs, a village greatly decayed from what it formerly was. It is situated on the Rhine, distant about two hours to the east of Basle. The country is now the canton of Basle.
