DOLCE

Volume 17 · 108 words · 1810 Edition

CARLO, or CARLINO, a celebrated history and portrait painter, was born at Florence in 1616, and was the disciple of Vignali. This great master was particularly fond of representing pious subjects, though he sometimes painted portraits; and his works are easily distinguished by the peculiar delicacy with which he perfected all his compositions, by a pleasing tint of colour, and by a judicious management of the chiaro scuro. His performance was remarkably slow; and it is reported that his brain was fatally affected by seeing Luca Jordana dispatch more buffaloes in four or five hours than he could have done in as many months. He died in 1686.
