ABBE JOHN, a French writer, born at Lyons in 1669. He distinguished himself in the dispute concerning Homer, between La Motte and Madame Dacier, by writing a Dissertation contre l'Ilinde. He wrote a political and moral romance called Sethos, full of learning and philosophy; and another capital work of his is a French translation of Diodorus Siculus. He died in 1750.
