ἀγκυλος, contraction, and ωψ, eye; in Medicine, denotes an abscess, or collection of matter, between the great angle of the eye and the nose. If suffered to remain too long, or unskilfully managed, it degenerates, the stagnating humours corrupt, and an ulcer is produced. When the tumor is broke, and the tears flow involuntarily, whilst the os lachrymale is not carious, it is an aglypos; but when the ulcer is of a long standing, deep, fetid, and the os lachrymale becomes carious, it is a fistula. The cure is by reduction and excision, tying it at the root on the glandula lachrymalis, and, when ready, cutting it off. See SURGERY. Index.
