or Angelical, something belonging to, or that partakes of, the nature of angels. We say an angelical life, &c. St Thomas is styled the angelical doctor. The angelical salutation is called by the Romansis Ave Maria; sometimes simply angelus.

Angelical Garment (Angelica vesicaria), among our ancestors, was a monkish garment, which laymen put on a little before their death, that they might have the benefit of the prayers of the monks. It was from them called angelical, because they were called angels, who by these prayers anima saluti succurrebant. Hence, where we read the phrase monachus ad succurrendum in our old books, it must be understood of one who had put on the habit when he was at the point of death.
